Guy Pearse highlights a fact long known within the community sector: private philanthropy is not something Australia excels in (‘Comment’). Given the vagaries of our tax system as it applies to philanthropy, it is no surprise to learn there may be a handful of donors in Australia with the means and inclination to fund politically charged environmental activism in a serious way. Given the resources devoted to activism of the reverse kind by those who profit from it, perhaps it’s not so hard to explain why a $26 per tonne carbon price is all the environment lobby dare ask for to make progress in the current political climate.
