I think it unfortunate that Marcia Langton (‘It’s a Knockout’, October) invariably feels the need to coat her genuine concerns with polemic and denigration towards those who don’t share her particular view of the world. Her belief, for instance, that opposition to the live-cattle trade and support for wilderness areas are the preserve of a ragtag collection of southern urban progressives suggests that she really ought to get out a little more. Convictions about both are to be found across the political spectrum, and are premised on the beliefs that animals and the natural world have a value independent of human economic designs.
