I am appalled, but not surprised, by Don Watson’s revelations (‘A New Dusk’, August). Years ago, when New South Wales decided to abolish selective high schools, the late Justice Frank Hutley wrote that the government, since it could not give a good education to everyone, had decided to give it to no one – I’m paraphrasing, but you get the gist. That decision was thankfully overturned, but Hutley’s prophecy is now coming to pass in our universities.
