There’s a lot for the people of Timor-Leste to be hopeful about, as Peter Robb’s narrative attests (‘Autumn of the Patriarch’, April). But while José Ramos-Horta has undoubtedly done much to create a global audience for the plight of Timor, it’s peculiar that many here might forget that the island is a mere one hour’s flight from our coastline. The polls have rustled up some media attention of late, but with UN and Australian troops set to withdraw this year, let’s hope that, post-election, life in Timor-Leste continues to be – as JRH describes – simply “peaceful, busy, normal”.
