I strongly agree with Robert Manne’s incisive Comment (‘Asylum Seekers’, September 2010). I would, however, suggest another motivation for mainstream Australia’s intransigence on this issue, based on one of the unapproachable truths about our attitude to social order and authority. Far from the myth of the larrikin, mainstream Australia is a compliant culture with strong norms around self-restraint. In the case of refugee politics, this manifests in the idea that “you can’t just rock up”, and that such behaviour should not be “rewarded”.
