Why gay and lesbian people, many of whom, like Penny Wong, hold progressive views, are so desperate to gain equal access to such a flawed tradition as marriage remains a mystery to me. And when the British prime minister, David Cameron, declares that he supports marriage equality precisely because he is a Conservative, I get even more concerned. There are more effective ways to strengthen society than by making exclusive vows to one other person. As Germaine Greer said, the problem with gay marriage is not the gay bit but the marriage bit.
