Peter Byrne, April 2015

The final paragraph of Quentin Sprague’s essay (March) described Mrs Gabori’s private dance among her Bentinck paintings in the National Gallery of Australia. No piece of writing has reminded me so well of how little I know and understand, and how little I am destined to understand, regardless of how I go about trying or the sources I seek out. In this time of necessary and difficult discussion about national support for remote Aboriginal communities, it would be beneficial for decision makers to be similarly reminded. Sometimes it is necessary to believe without understanding.
