Thomas Piketty’s already celebrated analysis of yawning income disparity would seem particularly complemented in Australia by Richard Cooke’s jaundiced discussion of our major parties (June).

The disproportionate solicitude of both parties for our wealthiest 1% is obvious in their deference to the most prolific greenhouse-gas generators and political donors, and also supports Carmen Lawrence’s contention that both are now essentially corporations, with similarly selfish and calculating preoccupations. As our present government is a radically advanced expression of the trend, it will be interesting to see if our collective intelligence can rein it in.
