Submitting your work

The Monthly welcomes unsolicited submissions, provided that the material has not previously been published in any form.

Emailed submissions are preferred, and must come with a short covering letter that includes:

  • your contact details,
  • a brief biographical note, and
  • a note on the section of the magazine for which your work is intended.

Email enquiries@themonthly.com.au

Submissions may be sent in hard copy, and must include the information listed above. Mail to The Monthly, Level 5, 289 Flinders Lane, Melbourne VIC 3000 Australia. If you would like your manuscript returned after assessment, please provide a stamped and addressed envelope.

The Monthly takes all care but no responsibility for any material submitted.

If you are submitting a proposal for a piece, ensure that your pitch is specific and substantial, and provide examples of relevant work that you have had published elsewhere.

Submissions are reviewed by at least two staff members, and you should allow two weeks for a response. Note that we may not continue to read submissions which do not engage our interest in the opening pages, and that we do not provide feedback on submissions.

We strongly encourage writers to look at recent issues of The Monthly for guidance on the magazine's different sections and its house style. Submissions that are tailored for the magazine stand a better chance of acceptance.

There is no word limit for submissions, but please be aware that the magazine rarely publishes work of more than 6000 words, and that most articles are commissioned. As a rough guide, pieces in The Nation Reviewed are 1000 to 1300 words, The Monthly Essays are 3000 to 6000 words, pieces in Arts & Letters are 1500 to 3000 words, and Noted reviews are around 350 words.

The Monthly Comment and the Encounter (the first and last pieces in the magazine) are commissioned. Please do not submit pieces for these sections.

As a small and busy team receiving a high volume of unsolicited work, we are unable to respond to each submission. If you have not heard from us within two weeks, please understand that your submission has not been successful.
