Shooting Balibo. Tony ManiatyIn 1975, journalist Tony Maniaty flew into the Portuguese colony of East Timor looking for a war to film, and found it at a dusty outpost called Balibo. Maniaty and his ABC News crew were shelled and five other television newsmen who followed were murdered by Indonesian troops. Facing death threats, Maniaty fled before Indonesian forces invaded. The generation-long nightmare of the East Timorese had begun. In his new book Shooting Balibo, Maniaty joins the cast and crew of the film Balibo as they travel upcountry. In the burned house where his colleagues were killed a generation earlier, past and present collide before his eyes. He discusses and reads from his book at Readings Carlton.
