Professor David Karoly from the School of Earth Sciences discusses how the record heatwaves and prolonged drought prior to the February 2009 bushfires in Victoria could be linked directly to climate change. He explains how the combination of these factors with the wind speed and low humidity on the day produced the unprecedented “fire danger index” that led to such extreme fire storm behaviour. Karoly's talk is followed by Kevin Tolhurst, who examines the many factors that affect the spread of bushfires.
