Before each federal election a legion of commentators, pollsters and ex-politicians deliberates doggedly and at length. Who, they ponder, will win this time? But might not ordinary citizens who are intelligent and politically aware actually be better at forecasting the outcome of a federal election?

The Monthly invites you to test your foresight and predict not only who will win but the number of seats and votes that the winner will attract. Those respondents who correctly forecast the outcome will share the $1000 cash prize.

Entrants join the friends of the Monthly to receive e-newsletters, giveaways and exclusive invitations to enter future political contests. They may unsubscribe at anytime. Email addresses that already exist on our database will not be duplicated.

Only one submission per person will be counted. If there are multiple submissions from a person with the same name or the same email address, only the first submission will be valid.

An incomplete submission may be deemed ineligible by the promoter. The promoter of this competition is the The Monthly Pty Ltd.

The $1000 reward will be divided evenly among all correct respondents.

If no correct responses are received in the contest period, then no reward will be paid.

Entries close at 1 pm (Australian Eastern Standard Time) on 18 August 2010.

Entry is only open to permanent Australian residents aged 18 years or over. Staff, contributors and contractors of the promoter may enter but will be ineligible to claim a reward. Any prize will only be delivered to an Australian street address.

Payment will be in Australian dollars and will only be delivered to an Australian postal address.

No responsibility will be taken for responses lost in transmission via the internet, or due to unforeseen circumstances.

The average results will be published online.

Respondents accept that the promoter’s decision is final.

This is a game of skill based on the psephological ability.
