At this Melbourne Writers Festival session, veteran political journalist Paul Kelly looks at the reigns and legacies of prime ministers Paul Keating and John Howard.

As he does in his new book The March of Patriots, Kelly describes Keating and Howard as brawlers, schemers and nation-builders, explaining that they were fashioned by the same forces and made by the same generation - rivals with competing visions yet united by the same challenges and shared national interest responses. Tony Abbott responds with an insiders' viewpoint and the event is chaired by The Age's political reporter, Misha Schubert.
