Margaret Merrilees and Jamie Miller criticise Robert Manne for changing his mind (June). They have a right to do this, although in my opinion you are entitled to change your mind about something when new evidence comes to light or after further consideration. However, Manne only changed his mind about Burchett in a minor way: Burchett - according to Manne - was not a KGB agent in the sense of Kim Philby, but only a diligent supplier of information and a go-between. Tibor Méray came to this same conclusion in On Burchett. I suggest that Merrilees and Miller read Méray's book and try to refute anything in it, instead of attacking Manne for changing his mind.
