Letters to the Editor | October 2010

No, Les Murray (‘Infinite Anthology’, August 2010): ‘pobbledonk’ shouldn’t be in the Macquarie Dictionary. There’s no Australian frog called a ‘pobbledonk’. But there are several related species sharing the name ‘pobblebonk’ (derived from the sound of a small group of males calling in sequence); not all of them are scarlet-sided and not all of them occur in coastal Queensland and New South Wales. ‘Pobblebonk’ is in general use in Australian fauna guidebooks: should it be in the Macquarie Dictionary? Of course it should.
