It was disappointing to read Gideon Haigh's article on Opera Australia and its music director, Richard Hickox, in the October edition of The Monthly.

Disappointing because the end result was so plainly one-sided. Not only were the lengthy interviews Mr Haigh conducted with Opera Australia Chairman Gordon Fell and me only selectively represented, but Mr Haigh appears to have ignored completely in his research the many supporters of Opera Australia, including artists, patrons and donors.

Opera Australia is an important national arts institution that serves many constituencies. People will have strong views on the work we do and, inevitably, we will encounter critics. This is appropriate and Opera Australia welcomes feedback.

Unfortunately, the matters raised in this article reflect the views of a small number of individuals, and lack substance. Since these views were first raised publicly, Opera Australia and Mr Hickox have received many letters of encouragement. Our most recent company meeting - comprising all performers, musicians, artists and technical staff - expressed overwhelming support for the current direction of Opera Australia.

Opera Australia remains focused on producing outstanding operatic work for the Australian community and support for our work - as measured by the box office, donations and sponsorship - has never been higher.
