The work of Zygmunt Bauman fits within the horizon of East European critical theory, or critical sociology. Its main interests are in culture and the critique of modernity. In this Key Thinkers lecture, Peter Beilharz examines Bauman’s life and work.  

Beilharz is Professor of Sociology and Director of the Thesis Eleven Centre for Cultural Sociology at La Trobe University. He was Chair of Australian Studies at Harvard University (1999-2000) and is Associate Fellow in Cultural Sociology at Yale University.
