Hilary Charlesworth: How Universal is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights?It's 60 years this year since the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. After two years of hard work, and much consultation, the Declaration came into being on the 10th of December. 1948. According to Hilary Charlesworth, while the significance of the Declaration is profound it was, and remains, a radical and controversial document. Hilary Charlesworth is the Director of the Centre for International Governance and Justice and Professor of International Law and Human Rights at the ANU.
